For 19 years I've traveled the world teaching people about something almost everyone wants: SUCCESS! Whether this is success in hitting a great approach shot to the green, or building a large and profitable business, the same principles apply. There are people in the world who believe being successful means you must be corrupt, cheat others or simply be an evil, selfish person. If you fall into that category you will want to turn the page because this article is not for you. In fact, what I have to say may make you angry!
One of my favorite speakers and authors, Earl Nightingale, said one of the most profound things I've ever heard: "You become what you think about most of the time." Golfers who walk around the course simply trying to get to the clubhouse with a score that's one stroke less than their last round or to stay out of the water will get no more than what they are thinking about. And the person who walks around the course thinking they are going to have the best round in their life and do all the right things have all the possibility in the world to do just that.
The greatest sports stars are where they are because they think they are great and they plan on getting better! Imagine the ego! Great! Do it. Decide you are going to control your thought life, kick out all negatives, and you are going to focus on being the best you can be and getting better every day! Watch what happens to your gold, your marriage, your business – everything! Or you can wake up each morning and say, "I'm going to be really average today! I'm going to be the most average I've ever been!" Then watch your results. I'll give you three guesses what they will be.
Here's a sample of what some successful and unsuccessful golfers think:
Successful: "I love to play this game! I was made for golf, I'm in my element and I belong here."
Unsuccessful: "Why do I keep playing this game! I don't belong here, look at my results! I haven't improved in five years but I keep punishing myself and wasting my money! Someday I'm going to wrap these clubs around a tree and never do this again!"
Successful: I flubbed that tee shot but I'm going to examine what I did wrong, make the necessary corrections, and at the next tee I'm going to hit an awesome shot!
Unsuccessful: "Not another f*#**#@##** slice!!! I always do that! Fine, let's see what else I can do to ruin this round!"
Successful: "I've never had to work so hard to get through a round of golf in my life but hey! This isn't work! I'm playing golf and I love it!"
Unsuccessful: "This is only the 15th hole? This is agony! My game sucks today. If I wasn't playing with this group I'd walk right off this course, out to my car and into a pub and curl up inside a nice tall glass of beer – maybe six!"
Successful: "My partner today is a lot better than I am. I wonder what I can learn from this guy? I'm going to ask him his secrets and watch him and be a student of the game."
Unsuccessful: "This guy is thrilled to play with me because I'm making him look like he's sitting on the top of the leaderboard at the Masters! He'll never want to play another round with me! I really suck!"
Successful: "Some people think this is the hardest, most frustrating game in the world, but I'm going to keep hitting buckets, keep taking lessons, and stick with it because I will become a great golfer. Good things take time and champions never quit."
Unsuccessful: "So, another lousy score. Why not? It is the hardest, most frustrating game in the world and if you aren't born with natural talent, there's nothing you can do about it. No more lessons! I'm lousy. So what?"
Successful: "I have a huge tree directly blocking my way to the fairway. But it's only one stroke to hit safely and then I can stroke a great approach. No problem!"
Unsuccessful: "Who designed this f*#**#@##** golf course! No one's watching. I'll just adjust my lie a bit and have a clear shot to the green. Why not? Everyone cheats."
Successful: "It's simple. I believe in me and my ability to play this game and that's half the battle. I've got the faith! Add the hard work and someday soon I'm walking in the clubhouse a scratch golfer!"
Unsuccessful: "It's simple. My wife thinks I'm throwing money down the toilet. My friends think I'm an idiot chasing a little ball around, trying to find the cup. Maybe they're right. I believe I'll quit now and get it over with."
What are you thinking about when you're out on the course? Do you control your thoughts or are your thoughts ruining the game you've always dreamed of having? What about off the course in your business and with your family and relationships and health? Remember, "You become what you think about, most of the time."
